ZOLZ "IN THE NEWS"

From the Times Herald Record:

Team's man-in-booth promises 'fun' summer - By Pete Caldera

Spontaneous, talkative radio personality Rick Zolzer was rehired as the Hudson Valley Renegades' public address announcer yesterday, three years after he and the Class A minor-league baseball club parted ways. Zolzer replaces Lisa Morris, who took over for Zolzer after the 1995 season. "I'm absolutely thrilled to be coming back to the Renegades," Zolzer said. "We're going to have a lot of fun this summer, and I can hardly wait for opening night (June 16) to get here."

Zolzer, 41, began a two year stint in the Renegades' public address booth in 1994, the club's inaugural season. His first stay included two memorable moments. In 1994, former major-leaguer Terry Kennedy, then an opposing minor-league manager, tried to barge through the public address window to get at Zolzer for making a comment (which was not intended to go over the p.a. system) about one of his pitchers. The two later cleared the air. In 1995, Zolzer was ejected from a game by a home plate umpire who thought he heard Zolzer make a quip about a balk call. That incident got Zolzer a mention in Sports Illustrated.

"We basically knew what direction we wanted to go and we knew he was open to coming back," said Renegades general manager Steve Gliner. "We like his ability to bring a lot of fresh ideas to the table. "After leaving the Renegades, where he also held the position as director of marketing and promotions, Zolzer briefly manned the public address mike for the now-defunct Newburgh Night Hawks. He also served as marketing consultant with the independent Northeast League.

Zolzer was co-host and sports director on local FM station WPDH's "Waking up with the Wolf" morning program for two years. He presently does sports commentary on Wolf's Albany-based radio station, WPYX.
